Such a Destination Wedding: A Royal Celebration in honor of the Queen’s Birthday

At the celebration held in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her 90th birthday on June 16, 2016, at Westminster House, the British High Commission in Colombo spared no cost in paying tribute to the monarch. A fitting tribute to the Queen and her lifetime of service to the nation was born in the form of a grand celebration attended by a diverse array of guests, including representatives from parliamentarians, business people, religious leaders, and representatives from the international community and civil society.

An appropriate homage to 2016 marks the 400th year since William Shakespeare, one of the most influential writers of all time, died most recognized writers in Britain; the subject for the evening was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which was also the name of the play that was performed. Met the visitors with a flurry of activity as they arrived, and entertainers entertained them with live music, dancing, and drama as they arrived.

Throughout the evening, served the guests a gourmet feast consisting of traditional British dishes and excellent wines from worldwide. Traditional foods such as roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, and sticky toffee pudding were all available to order from the menu. To show their appreciation to the Queen for her undying service to the country her whole life, the guests poured large quantities of wine for everyone and proposed a toast to her. The Queen accepted the toast with a smile.

British High Commissioner James Dauris ascended to the dais to honor the Queen and her many achievements. He lauded Her Majesty for her unwavering commitment to the well-being of her people and the arduous labor she puts into her royal responsibilities. He praised the monarchy, calling Her Majesty “a great ruler.”

Guests were seen dancing and singing along to live music performed by a local band well into the night as the birthday festivities lasted late into the night. The celebration ended, and when the guests departed Westminster House, they took memories of an enchanted and remarkable evening. The Queen’s 90th birthday celebration was a truly royal occasion, complete with entertainment, pomp, and imperial majesty. The Queen became 90 years old. Everyone who had the good fortune to be there would agree that it was an unforgettable evening.
